Even smarty-pants know-it-all adults benefit from subtitles. In a related study, researchers found that highly literate adults remembered brand names better when they watched captioned TV commercials. Same-language video captions also boosted the memory and cognition of college students. In a 1998 study, researchers reported that college students remembered course content significantly better when they watched captioned course lectures.
On Friday, during coverage of the new King Charles III and his wife Camilla as they landed in London from Scotland the subtitles flashed the word vagina instead of Regina. It was to explain that Camilla will not be Queen Regina, or a reigning queen, but a Queen Consort as the partner of the new monarch.
\"BBC subtitles spectacularly mishearing the words \"Queen Regina\" during a conversation about Camilla just now,\" one eagle-eyed viewer commented on Twitter soon after spotting the awkward moment on television.
Most news channels in the UK suspended their usual programming the moment the 96-year-old monarch passed away peacefully at her Balmoral Castle residence in Scotland. In the coming days, the Queen's coffin will depart her Balmoral estate for the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

On November 18 El Rosario opened the monarch sanctuaries for tourists to visit during the 2022-2023 overwintering season. Carmelo Martínez Colín from Ejido Cerro Prieto took the photos below of the colonies already forming in Sierra Chincua. The forests that shelter our beloved monarchs during the winter are being conserved thanks to the efforts of Carmelo and the people and communities that like him, are committed to the protection of our natural resources.
The King's Christmas Message (also known as The Queen's Christmas Message in the reign of a female monarch, formally as His Majesty's Most Gracious Speech,[1][2] and informally as the Royal Christmas Message) is a broadcast made by the sovereign of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms to the Commonwealth of Nations each year at Christmas. The tradition began in 1932 with a radio broadcast by King George V via the British Broadcasting Corporation's Empire Service. The message is broadcast on television, radio, and the Internet via various providers. It is usually broadcast at 15:00 GMT (3:00 PM) on Christmas Day.
The message typically combines a chronicle of that year's major events, with specific focus on the Commonwealth of Nations, and with the sovereign's own personal milestones and feelings on Christmas. It is one of the few instances when the sovereign speaks publicly without advice from any ministers of the Crown in any of the monarch's realms. Planning for each year's address begins months earlier, when the monarch establishes a theme and appropriate archival footage is collected and assembled; the actual speech is recorded a few days prior to Christmas.[6]
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia makes speeches on his official birthday in June and on National Heroes Day in July, while the Prime Minister of Malaysia also makes speeches not only on New Year's Day but also on the night of Eid ul-Fitr and on the eve of Independence Day. The Prime Minister of Singapore gives his speech on this occasion and on the National Day of Singapore. In the past, the Governor of Hong Kong, as the representative of the British monarch, played this role; the tradition was carried on by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong upon the territory's transfer of sovereignty to China in 1997.
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch who ascended the throne at just 27 years old and ruled the United Kingdom for more than 70 years, has died, Buckingham Palace announced on Twitter.
Queen Elizabeth was, in many ways, a record-setting monarch. In 2007, she surpassed her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, as the longest-lived British monarch; since 2015, Queen Elizabeth has held the title of longest-reigning British monarch.
Once assuming the role as head of the commonwealth in 1952, the queen spent much of her first decade modernizing the role and image of the monarchy. In 1957, the queen delivered her Christmas address on T.V. broadcast for the first time.
Through it all, Queen Elizabeth continued to travel thousands of miles to meet members of the extended commonwealth in Northern Ireland, and overseas in the South Pacific and Australia, in Canada, and in the Caribbean. She also became the first British monarch to address a joint session of Congress following a Gulf War victory in 1991.
Monarch butterflies, which are in severe decline, have a special relationship with milkweed. In fact, it's the ONLY plant that monarch caterpillars eat, so every plant you have in your yard provides a huge benefit to their survival.
But supporting pollinators like the monarch is only one small part of the story because many pollinator species are being threatened by actions that destroy and divide their habitat. As they decline, food options for humans and other animals also decline, and no one wants that!
This time was set by King George V when he delivered his first Christmas speech in a radio broadcast in 1932. Unlike today, the monarch had to deliver his speech live from a specially re-purposed room at Sandringham House which was transformed into a recording studio.
4. To date three monarchs have delivered Christmas broadcasts to the nation; King George V, who began the tradition in 1932; King George VI, who gave his first speech in 1937; and Queen Elizabeth II, who gave 69 speeches in total. There was no broadcast in 1936 as King Edward VIII, who inherited the throne from his father George V in January, abdicated on December 11. It was decided that his successor, George VI, would skip the tradition that year.
5. In 1992, the year of her \"annus horribilis\" and intense public interest in royal dramas, the queen's speech was leaked when tabloid newspaper The Sun broke a media embargo two days before Christmas. The monarch threatened to sue for breach of copyright and received a front page apology.
Ann Baldridge is the executive director of the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County. They are partnering with Earth Discovery Institute to build a native milkweed program, dedicated to growing safe habitat for the Monarch. She says monarchs are imperiled by loss of habitat, increased use of herbicides and pesticides, as well as climate change.
Baldridge says the Monarch has not been listed as endangered here in the United States yet, but the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will make a decision in the years ahead. In December 2020, FWS determined that listing the monarch under the Endangered Species Act was warranted, but other species took higher priority.
Gastelum is on a one-woman mission to step up her help for the beloved butterfly, also running a native seed library for her community and a monarch waystation at her home: a place for monarchs to rest, refuel, and lay eggs during their migration journey. She hopes if everyone works together, the monarch will be saved.
Wild monarch butterfly populations have declined by an estimated 90% in the past two decades, due to habitat loss primarily in the Midwestern U.S., where these migratory butterflies spend the summer months. Monarch butterflies are routinely purchased from commercial growers for release at weddings, funerals, and other celebrations, and to raise in classrooms and exhibits for educational purposes. Out of concern for monarch conservation, some private citizens are also rearing hundreds to thousands of monarchs in backyard operations for release into the wild.
Here in Washington state, monarchs are only seen east of the Cascades and then only where milkweed grows. Ann Potter, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife insect conservation specialist, says that milkweed grows at elevations lower than 2,000 feet and in drainages where there is good access to water.
